Embarking on a job search can be both gratifying and frustrating. On the one hand, it serves as a journey of self-discovery, revealing what you want from a prospective employer. Yet, it can also prove to be a difficult road marked by rejection, abandonment, and, in the worst cases, encounters with deceitful job scammers. We delve into all of these factors more in our 2023 Trust Gap Report. Here’s how you can emerge as the hero of your job-hunting journey, distinguishing between the YES, NO, and WHOA of your job search.
The YES – Skill Enhancement
Starting a job search provides an opportunity to add new skills to your basket. This can be achieved through active learning or immersive experiences. Develop your ability to identify learning prospects. Perhaps there’s a short course that could give you a competitive advantage in your job application. Or, you could go on an interview that, although unsuccessful, sets you up better for the next one. There are opportunities to learn at every stage of your journey. By acknowledging and applying these insights, you can gain an edge in future job applications.
Some practical instances of skill development include:
- Enrolling in an online course
- Participating in webinars
- Volunteering in a field that resonates with your passion
- Establishing connections with individuals within your industry or field
- Following blogs dedicated to job searching or your specific industry
There is no right or wrong way to do skills development; the key is to remain open and prepared to recognise and cultivate them whenever you see the opportunities.
The NO – Rejection
There’s no sugarcoating it – rejection is never fun. One of the most disheartening aspects of job hunting is facing a barrage of ‘NO’s. Hearing these responses repeatedly (or worse, receiving no response at all) can take a toll on your job search enthusiasm. Nonetheless, you need not succumb to the weight of rejection. Just as you seize opportunities to bolster your skill set, consider each rejection as a learning opportunity. It’s possible that you delivered an outstanding interview and were still passed over; this might not be your fault.
Post-interview analysis can be insightful; try to identify recurring patterns. There might be an aspect of your approach that needs adjustment. Alternatively, it could be a matter of simply not aligning with that company’s culture or requirements. Document your findings to prevent disappointment, either by pinpointing areas for enhancement or by recognising that your dream role is still out there.
The WHOA – Job Scammers
Unfortunately, for every genuine hiring manager earnestly seeking their next valuable colleague, there are opportunistic scammers preying on vulnerable job seekers. Throughout your job search, you’ve got to keep your eyes open. Stay alert for any signs of suspicious activity.
Some indicators of potential job scams include:
- Offers that seem too good to be true, promising more than appears realistically feasible.
- Insufficient information regarding the job or company, with the person offering the job purposefully evading clear details about the job role or company name, even after you’ve provided personal information.
- Unprofessional correspondence, which could include copious spelling errors or a clear lack of affiliation with a reputable organisation.
- Lack of contact information in their emails, indicating a reluctance to be easily reachable or researched outside of email communication.
- Discrepancies in search results; when you attempt to research them online, you find no real information about them or the alleged company.
- Requests for confidential information, despite a lack of clarity regarding the role or company; ethical recruiters typically request such information only when the job details are clear.
- Demands for payment or bank account details; legitimate recruiters are not supposed to charge applicants for applying or request payments for background checks.
- Solicitation of funds for unfamiliar software, especially if it’s software you haven’t heard of; this not only risks financial loss and giving away your bank account details, but also the potential download of malware that could compromise your computer’s security.
Always trust your instincts. If something appears suspicious, it’s better to forego the opportunity than to jeopardise your security.
In Summary:
Every job hunt carries valuable lessons. Stay open to all opportunities to evolve as a candidate, and it won’t be long before you discover the job that perfectly suits you.
