Job Overview:

The IT Sales Representative will be responsible for driving the sales of IT solutions, services, and products to local municipalities across South Africa. This role requires a deep understanding of the unique challenges within the public sector and the ability to build strong relationships with municipal stakeholders. The ideal candidate will leverage both technical knowledge and sales expertise to grow the company’s footprint within the local government and municipal sector.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Sales Development & Lead Generation:

    • Pro-actively identify and generate new business opportunities within local municipalities, including tender opportunities, RFPs (Requests for Proposals), and direct sales.

    • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of prospects through various channels (cold calling, networking, attending local government events, digital marketing efforts, etc.).

    • Develop and execute strategic sales plans to meet and exceed sales targets and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

  2. Client Relationship Management:

    • Cultivate and maintain a strong long-term relationships with key municipal decision-makers, including IT Directors / IT Managers, Procurement officers, and senior administrators like Corporate Services Director and Chief Financial Officer.

    • Conduct regular meetings, presentations, and product demonstrations to prospective clients and existing accounts.

    • Understand the needs and pain points of local municipalities and tailor solutions that address those challenges.

  3. Product Knowledge & Solution Selling:

    • Leverage in-depth product knowledge to effectively communicate the features, benefits, and ROI (Return on Investment) of IT solutions, services, and products to municipalities.

    • Stay up-to-date with trends in local government IT, such as smart city initiatives, public sector digital transformation, cloud solutions, Cybersecurity, and infrastructure modernization.

  4. Tender/Bid Management:

    • Respond to RFPs and tender opportunities from local municipalities, ensuring that all proposals meet client requirements and are compliant with South African public procurement processes.

    • Collaborate with technical teams to prepare competitive bids and proposals that align with municipal needs and budget constraints.

  5. Sales Reporting & Forecasting:

    • Provide accurate and timely sales forecasts and reports to management, including tracking sales activities, revenue projections, and market trends.

    • Use CRM (Customer Relationship Management) tools to track interactions, sales activities, and client information.

  6. Market Research & Strategy:

    • Conduct regular market research to identify emerging trends, competitor activities, and new business opportunities within the local government and municipality space.

    • Develop and implement targeted strategies to differentiate the company’s offerings from competitors and position solutions as the preferred choice for municipalities.

  7. Customer Support & After-Sales:

    • Ensure a seamless handover to the account management or implementation team post-sale, providing insights into customer needs and project requirements.

    • Address customer queries or concerns during the post-sales phase, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction and retention.

Key Competencies:

  1. Sales Skills:
    • Proven ability to close sales and meet/exceed sales targets.

    • Strong negotiation, persuasion, and relationship-building skills.

  2. Understanding of Local Government Needs:

    • In-depth knowledge of the local government sector, including key challenges, regulatory frameworks, and IT infrastructure needs.

    • Familiarity with municipal procurement processes, government tenders, and public sector funding.

  3. Product & Technical Knowledge:

    • Strong technical understanding of IT solutions (e.g., cloud services, hardware, software, Cybersecurity) and how these can be applied to municipal challenges.

    • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, non-technical way to decision-makers.

  4. Customer-Focused:

    • Excellent listening and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand customer needs and propose tailored solutions.

    • Ability to manage long sales cycles and complex client relationships.

  5. Communication & Presentation:

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations and product demonstrations.

    • Ability to clearly articulate value propositions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  6. Negotiation & Closing:

    • Strong negotiation skills to secure favourable terms for both the customer and the company.

    • Ability to manage pricing discussions, contractual agreements, and closing strategies.

  7. Time Management & Organization:

    • Ability to manage multiple accounts, projects, and tasks simultaneously.

    • Strong organizational skills, with a focus on follow-up and closing deals within set time frames.

  8. Collaboration:

    • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, including marketing, technical support, and project management, to deliver seamless service to customers.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  1. Education:
    • The successful candidate will have a matric or equivalent.

    • A degree or diploma in Information Technology, Business, Marketing, or a related field.

    • Additional certifications in sales, project management, or public sector procurement (e.g., CIDB, Government Tendering) are advantageous.

  2. Experience:

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT sales, preferably within the public sector or local government space.

    • Demonstrated track record of sales success in the IT sector, particularly in dealing with large-scale public sector clients, such as municipalities.

  3. Skills & Certifications:

    • Proficiency with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot).

    • Familiarity with government procurement processes and regulations in South Africa.

    • Understanding of IT infrastructure, cloud computing, Cybersecurity, and digital transformation in the public sector.

  4. Additional Requirements:

    • The successful candidate must be older than 23.

    • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to municipal offices and client sites.

    • Road legal vehicle that are in very good condition and that is reliable.

    • Bilingualism (English/Afrikaans and other local languages) is an advantage.
