Safety & Security Officer
- Johannesburg, Isando
ROLE OVERVIEW
Edward Snell & Co. are seeking a highly motivated, customer-focused Safety & Security Officer to join our dynamic manufacturing team in Gauteng.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with health and safety laws and industry standards, develop and maintain safety policies and procedures specific to factory risks, and ensure all safety equipment, tools, and practices meet legal and company requirements
- Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Conduct regular risk assessments to identify workplace hazards (physical, chemical, ergonomic, biological), develop strategies to mitigate risks, and maintain an updated hazard register while continuously monitoring and reassessing potential risks
- Safety Inspections and Audits: Conduct routine factory inspections to identify unsafe practices, lead internal audits, and coordinate external inspections. Record findings and ensure timely implementation of corrective actions to maintain safety standards
- Accident Investigation and Reporting: Investigate workplace accidents and near-misses to identify causes, implement corrective actions, and maintain accurate records. Prepare detailed reports for management and ensure compliance with reporting regulations
- Training and Education: Organize and deliver safety training on machine safety, PPE, emergency procedures, first aid, and fire safety. Ensure new employee orientation, regular refresher courses, and maintain training records for all employees
- Emergency Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response plans for fire safety, first aid, chemical spills, and evacuations. Conduct drills, and maintain first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency equipment in working order
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management: Ensure appropriate PPE is available, properly used, and in good condition. Conduct regular checks, replace defective or expired equipment, and provide guidance on correct PPE use in different work environments
- Health and Safety Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of safety training, accident reports, and inspections. Provide regular reports on safety performance to management and ensure all documentation is up-to-date, accessible, and ready for audits or inspections
- Safety Culture Development: Promote a safety culture by engaging employees in initiatives, encouraging reporting of unsafe practices, investigating reports, and fostering open communication between management and staff regarding health and safety concerns.
QUALIFICATION & MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
- NQF level 6 qualification (Diploma) and/or Certified in risk management and health/safety management. SAMTRAC advantageous.
- Minimum three years of safety and risk management experience
- Security and CCTV management knowledge
- Working knowledge of Major Hazard Installation
- Working knowledge of ISO9001, 14001 & 45001 (preferred)
- MS Office Package – Intermediate Level (preferred)
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Ability to identify hazards and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with employees at all levels.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in MS Office and safety management software.
