Job Description

Our client is looking for an HSSE Officer (Safety Officer) who will be responsible for facilitating and implementing compliance measures in accordance with occupational health and safety (OHSA) guidelines and all other relevant legal regulations and acts. The main goal will always be to ensure a healthy and safe working environment through continuous improvement to prevent any injuries and accidents.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day responsibility and management of all HSSE-related matters.
  • Conduct site inspections on the plant.
  • Maintain toolbox talks and workplace inspections.
  • Conduct and keep a record of site-specific inductions.
  • In cooperation with the Management team and Supervisors of the plant, develop, implement and maintain a Baseline Risk Assessment
  • Develop, implement, and maintain issue-based risk assessments based on baseline risk assessment.
  • Develop, implement and maintain safe work procedures, Code of Practices, Procedures, etc., according to the Baseline Risk assessment.
  • Maintain and request training (SHE rep, Forklifts, Bobcat, etc.)
  • Assist with work permit administration.
  • Develop, implement, maintain and assist with all operational controls regarding Safety, Health, Environment and Quality.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) over-inspections and random inspections
  • Prepare and present reports on accidents, incidents, and non-conformances, as well as determine root causes.
  • Chair Safety Committee meetings in the absence of the manager.
  • Chair SHE Representative meetings.
  • Review and maintain existing policies and procedures.
  • Work with HR to set up a new employee onboarding process for safety.
  • Request and maintain Vehicle permits/ licenses as per the training matrix.
  • Maintain Training Matrix – Medicals/ First Aid/ Fire Extinguisher Training
  • Advise and lead employees on various safety-related topics.
  • Work with HR to book inductions, medicals, and training according to Training matrix (keep Training matrix up to date)
  • Conduct incident investigations and report to authorities
  • Implement and maintain KBH HSSE Management system (SHEMS) – Document control and maintain all elements of the SHEMS.
  • Management of MP2 Plant HSSE contractors i.e., assist with onboarding procedures, training, site training, and day-to-day management of HSSEQ-related matters
  • Co-ordinate and work with the HSSE Operational Manager on all HSSEQ-related matters
  • Conduct Internal audits and inspections
  • Maintain and submit manhours, leading and lagging indicators, etc., for the Plant

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 years of experience as a Safety Officer or in a similar role
  • SAMTRAC/COMSOC 1 & 2
  • Good working knowledge of ISO requirements and systems
  • Excellent knowledge of legislation and procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • 3 years of experience in producing reports
  • Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Working knowledge of safety management information system
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Good time-management skills
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Certificate / Diploma in occupational health and safety
