We are looking for an experienced Underground Engineer to join our team. As an Underground Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing underground construction projects, including tunnels, pipelines, and mining operations. Your role will involve ensuring the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of underground structures while adhering to industry regulations and best practices. In this role, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including geologists, civil engineers, and construction managers, to develop innovative solutions for underground infrastructure. You will conduct site assessments, analyze geological and environmental conditions, and create detailed engineering plans. Additionally, you will be responsible for supervising construction activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and troubleshooting any technical challenges that arise during the project lifecycle. A successful Underground Engineer should have a strong background in civil or geotechnical engineering, with expertise in underground construction techniques. You should be proficient in using engineering software for design and analysis, as well as possess excellent problem-solving and communication skills. Experience in tunneling, mining, or underground utilities will be highly advantageous. Responsibilities:

  • Design and plan underground infrastructure projects, including tunnels and pipelines.
  • Conduct site assessments and analyze geological and environmental conditions.
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Supervise construction activities and provide technical guidance to teams.
  • Collaborate with geologists, civil engineers, and project managers.
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges and propose effective solutions.
  • Monitor project progress and ensure timely completion within budget.
  • Maintain the Quality, Environmental and Mining Records for the project;
  • Develop the short to medium term mine plans for the underground operation, ensuring all key mining physicals are achieved in line with the principles quarterly mine plan;
  • All aspects of drill and blast design are reviewed for execution;
  • All aspects of paste backfill design, reviewed for execution;
  • All aspects of mine ventilation are working effectively;
  • Provide technical support and quality control of the works in accordance with the Contract Specification and the relevant Statutory Regulations;
  • Inspect work at frequent intervals to ensure work quality meets stated objectives and the required environmental controls are in place
  • Engineering and Project Management of multi-disciplinary construction and supply packages during design, planning, procurement, construction, and commissioning, with a focus on scope, quality, cost, and time.
  • Leading the mechanical engineering discipline during design, fabrication, construction, and commissioning with a focus on functionality, safety and adherence to standards and regulations.
  • Leading the setup and execution of procurement and project controls functions on various execution projects in South Africa
  • Technical review of design deliverables, execution plans and contractor proposals.
  • Stakeholder management and project performance reporting.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  •  Proven experience in underground construction, tunneling, or mining projects.
  •  Proven experience with EPCMs on Projects.
  •  Proficiency in engineering software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar tools.
  •  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  •  Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  •  Knowledge of safety regulations and industry best practices.
  •  Ability to work in challenging environments and manage multiple projects.
  •  Professional engineering license or certification is a plus.
