Nature of employment: Limited duration contract for the Project (estimated duration: 2-3 years)
Payroll category: Monthly Salaried Staff
Reports to: General Manager
Job purpose: lead the Survey and Mine Planning department and function on site. Meet with Client representatives to conduct mine planning and map out mining areas, use electronic survey equipment (including Drones) and programs to make accurate measurements to determine the mine/operation boundaries/scope of work and determine production volumes achieved. Provide data related to shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features for engineering, mapmaking, mining, land evaluation, construction, and other purposes.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Mine Planning
Must have an excellent understanding of economic principles behind a profitable mine plan (mineral quality parameters, blending, cut-off grade/quality, limits, mining width, dilution, recovery, contamination), as well as the following:
- Understanding concepts and applying principles of integrated mine planning (advanced producing short- and medium-term planning).
- Generate extraction layouts and production schedules including resource and equipment requirements for mining final products.
- Preparing and collating information to determine the risks associated with the execution of the short and medium term mine plan.
- Analysing production results against planned schedules and recommending corrective action Creating operational mining infrastructure and resources schedule.
To be performed in conjunction with the Mining Planner and Production Department:
- Meet with Client Representatives to conduct Mine scheduling, short term and medium term planning and generate Mine plans.
- Conduct Mine scheduling and resource allocation plans.
- Interpret the mining operational plan and production results to develop a monthly operation plan.
- Ensure that all Mining plans are signed off via correct levels of authority.
- Communicate all approved Mining plans to Production Department.
- Liaise with other related disciplines to gather information necessary to fulfil duties.
- Provide guidance and issue verbal and/ or written instructions to ensure that all mining related activities are in adherence to the approved Mining plan.
- Participate in production scheduling and conduct studies to ensure the efficient allocation of Heavy Earthmoving Equipment.
- Compile the project input to the strategic business plans for the Mine.
- Responsible for the planning/coordination/liaising of planning meeting at pre-determined
- Highlight deviations to the plan and identify opportunities to catch up or exceed the
- Portray true reflection of mining operations and geological features on the
- Monitor modifying factors through technical

2. Mine Survey Responsibilities
To be done in conjunction with the Survey team:
- Operating Survey equipment and conduct surveys to achieve accurate survey
- Map out area of work and ensure that all work is conducted within mining parameters, scope and in accordance with the mining
- Ensure that surveys are carried out according to plan, results are timeously reported, deviations identified and corrective actions
- Liaise with applicable Representatives from Client and establish professional
- Execute all survey activities in compliance with Safety and Quality policies, procedures and
- Implement systems to ensure quality control of plan and that layout delivery is designed, implemented and
- Schedule and plan resources and logistics to meet survey work output
- Ensure that the quality of mine surveying practice and mining operations in general are continuously
- Timeously compile and present survey reports of production to management and or the
- Daily/ weekly/ monthly measuring and reporting as per contractual requirements and managerial
- Compare survey results and negotiate with client to agree on final monthly survey report of volumes mined, for certificate
3. Supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise Survey and Mine planning Act as Mentor and Advisor.
- Develop and implement development plans for team members in conjunction with the HR/HRD
- Ensure adherence to all related Company policies and procedures
4. Communication
- Communicate training needs and HR related matters to the training and HR
- Communicate all SHEQ related matters and legal aspects to designated
- Attend caucus meetings to keep employees
- Sustain and manage communication in accordance with TAU mining communication
- Attend all scheduled/ Ad hoc applicable Client and internal
Minimum Job requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12) passed,
- Dip Mine Survey or similar related qualification completed,
- At least 8-10 years’ Survey and Mine Planning experience of which 3-5 years must be at Supervisory level in an Opencast Mining environment,
- Advanced level skills: Mine Planning & Survey software e., Xpac, Modelmaker, Deswik
- Valid Drone License & experience (Mavik 3 preferred),
- Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control Training (HIRAC)
- Clean criminal record,
- Must have a valid Driver’s
Knowledge, Attitude, Skills & Abilities:
- Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
- Adherence to Sect 22 & 23 of the MHSA
- Excellent knowledge and operating ability on Model Maker, MicroStation or other software with reference and the ability to perform the following:
- Haul
- Volumetric calculations to determine tonnages moved (cut & fill);
- Converting raw survey data and building of
- Drill
- Ramp plans to determine if it is according to mine
- Creating of pegs with reference to pit boundaries to
- Month End
- Converting of STR & DWG Files to correct coordinates
