Overall Purpose of the Role:

The Underwriter plays a key role in processing SME credit applications. The Underwriter is responsible for assessing the affordability and payment profiles of applicants, in line with the Banks’ lending criteria. The Underwriter will work closely with the Underwriting Manager, within the Underwriting Department

Experience and Skills Required:

Education

• Diploma, Degree or other suitable Tertiary Qualification

Experience

• Minimum of 3 -5 years’ experience in assessing SME Loans/ Unsecured Lending
• Proven credit risk and/or credit underwriting experience within the Financial Services industry
• High level of understanding credit risk assessment and principles of lending
• Experience in understanding and analysing bank statement data
• Experience in working under pressure and with the ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task
• Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft, preferably Sales Force
• Exposure to reading and understanding credit bureau reports
• Exposure to reading and understanding financial statements
• Effective Communicator
• Analytical with strong financial acumen

Responsibilities:

• Performing risk assessments in line with the Banks credit policies and procedures Evaluating client’s financial information
• Responsible for completing all necessary reference checks and establishing credit worthiness of the applicant
• Analyse bank statement data
• Analyse credit bureau data
• Conclude financial reviews (if required) using financial statements
• Required to make recommendations based on analysis of application data
• Summarizing assessment findings in a clear and concise manner’
• Required to adhere to the banks policy and procedures, as well as mandatory regulations
• Issuing of contracts once applications have been approved
• Facilitating disbursements once signed contracts received
• Ensuring TAT and SLAs are met as required
• Required to work independently, as well as the ability to work well within the team
• Needs to be methodical and organised
• Required to be responsive and flexible, with an open mind to find solutions to overcome challenges
• Required to ensure excellent levels of communication – both written and verbal, furthermore, required to comfortably share information with both colleagues and senior personnel
• Requires high attention to detail, and needs to display high level of ethics during the credit evaluation process
